- Common Noun (જાતિવાચક નામ)
- Abstract Noun (ભાવવાચક નામ)
- Collective Noun (સમૂહવાચક નામ)
દરેકની વ્યાખ્યા, નિયમો, ઉદાહરણો, ભૂલો, ટ્રિક્સ અને MCQs સાથે આપણે આજે જાણીશું.
1. Noun – General Definition
English: A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, animal, or idea.
Gujarati: વ્યક્તિ, સ્થળ, વસ્તુ, પ્રાણી કે ભાવના દર્શાવતા શબ્દને Noun કહે છે.
Example: કૃષ્ણ, અમદાવાદ, ટેબલ, સુંદરતા, ટોળું.
2. Types of Noun (ચાર મુખ્ય પ્રકાર)

2.1 Proper Noun (વ્યક્તિવાચક નામ)
Definition: A specific name of a particular person, place, or thing. Always starts with a capital letter.
Gujarati: કોઈ ચોક્કસ વ્યક્તિ, સ્થળ કે વસ્તુનું નામ.
Rules:
- Always capitalize first letter.
- No plural normally (except when family or namesake: There are two Rajus in my class)
- No ‘a/an’ before Proper Noun (except in rare cases like “He thinks he is a Einstein”)
Examples:
| Narendra Modi | નરેન્દ્ર મોદી |
| Gandhinagar | ગાંધીનગર |
| The Taj Mahal | તાજમહેલ |
Common Mistakes:
❌ i met sita yesterday.
✅ I met Sita yesterday.
❌ He is a Ramesh.
✅ He is Ramesh.
Exam Tip:
Proper Nounના પ્રશ્નોમાં Capital letter અને ‘a/an’ નો ઉપયોગ ચૂકી જવાય છે. હંમેશા ધ્યાન રાખો.
2.2 Common Noun (જાતિવાચક નામ)
Definition: A general name for a class of persons, places, or things.
Gujarati: સમગ્ર જાતિનું સામાન્ય નામ.
Rules:
- Starts with a small letter (unless at the start of a sentence).
- Can be pluralized.
- Can have ‘a/an’ and ‘the’.
Examples:
| boy | છોકરો |
| city | શહેર |
| river | નદી |
Comparison: Proper vs Common
| Ahmedabad | city |
| Ganga | river |
| Sunita | girl |
Common Mistakes:
❌ I live in a City. (city – common noun, but here unnecessary capital)
✅ I live in a city.
2.3 Abstract Noun (ભાવવાચક નામ)
Definition: Names an idea, quality, feeling, or state that cannot be seen or touched.
Gujarati: જેને આપણે જોઈ કે સ્પર્શી ન શકીએ – લાગણી, ગુણ, અવસ્થા.
Formation Rules (તે કેવી રીતે બને):
| kind | kindness |
| honest | honesty |
| brave | bravery |
| grow | growth |
| know | knowledge |
Examples:
- Love, Anger, Happiness, Honesty, Childhood, Poverty, Freedom
Common Mistakes:
❌ He has a great honesty.
✅ He has great honesty.
❌ I believe in truth.
✅ I believe in truth.
Exam Trick:
Abstract noun = you cannot touch it. Ask yourself: “Can I hold it in my hand?” If No → Abstract.
2.4 Collective Noun (સમૂહવાચક નામ)
Definition: A word that names a group of people, animals, or things as a single unit.
Gujarati: સમૂહ દર્શાવતો શબ્દ, જોકે તે એકવચન હોય છે.
Important Collective Nouns Table:
| People | team, crowd, committee, audience, family, jury |
| Animals | herd (cows), pack (wolves), flock (sheep), swarm (bees) |
| Things | bunch (grapes), fleet (ships), stack (books) |
Rule of Verb with Collective Noun:
- If the group acts as one unit → Singular verb.
- If members act individually → Plural verb.
✅ The team is playing well. (one unit)
✅ The team are arguing among themselves. (individual members)
Common Mistakes:
❌ The jury was divided in their opinion. (Incorrect because divided shows individuals)
✅ The jury were divided in their opinion.
❌ A flock of birds were flying. (Incorrect – flock is singular)
✅ A flock of birds was flying.
Exam Trick:
Collective noun + of + plural noun → focus on collective noun for verb (singular unless split)
3. Complete Micro-Concept Table
| Proper | Specific | India | Yes | No | Rare |
| Common | General | country | No | Yes | Yes |
| Abstract | Idea/feeling | honesty | No | No | Rare |
| Collective | Group | team | No | Yes | As unit |
4. Exam Tips (Tricks to Solve Fast)
- Proper Noun Trap: Options માં proper noun ની સામે small letter હોય તો error.
- Abstract Noun Formation: Adjective + ness/ity/dom/hood etc. (kind→kindness, free→freedom)
- Collective Noun Verb Agreement: એકતા હોય તો singular verb, વિભાજન હોય તો plural.
- “The + Adjective” sometimes becomes abstract: The rich = rich people (common), richness = abstract.
- Shortcut for exams:
- Can I touch it? Yes → Common/Proper. No → Abstract.
- Is it a specific name? Yes → Proper.
- Is it a group name? Yes → Collective.
